- (Current contents of my head:) I don't believe we need God in Government, just virtue (morality/ethics). Unfortunately, for many in the West, religion is the only source. It really always has been. The schools got it from there, but then it was outlawed in school. The parents often did too, then taught it to their kids, but now there are nothing but latchkey kids and overworked, busy (or apathetic and irresponsible) parents. If people lose faith and there is no other source for virtue, guess what is going to happen. Take a good look around you! (Sorry to wizz in your Cheerios...) There are no shortcuts to what is valuable: virtue, education, success, respect, friendship or love...only cheap and insufficient replacements. As far as I'm concerned, undertake whatever gets you closer to virtue, since that is the highest goal...and make sure you are sincere if you decide to choose religion, whichever one brings you to virtue, or you will not at all be taken seriously by others nor will you ever be able to convince them that virtue is the reason for doing so. In other words, you will have completely missed the point (as so many seem to have done)!
